The Designing Editor(CD)
by Patricia Westfall

The book, in CD format, is intended for communication courses that cover design but are not focused design courses. Examples would be public relations, magazine editing, software instruction courses with units on design, or graphics courses for non-design majors. The book's inexpensive and brief format is ideal for such limited coverage. It offers more depth in design than a standard professional editing textbook, but does not add significantly to the cost of a course. Students need no prior design training to benefit.

Instead of "rules" or design principles, the book offers a vocabulary for analyzing design. The underlying assumption is that students will need to communicate with designers in the future and use of these concepts can smooth those relationships. With humor and bright illustrations, the book develops awareness of edges, lines, shapes, color, type and basic page layout.

Patricia Westfall teaches courses in magazine editing, graphics software, and information gathering in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.
